From our beginning in 1858, the YWCAs around the world have stood for the elimination of
racism and empowerment of women - which continues today!

Throughout the world, YWCAs are in 122 countries serving 25 million women and their families.

In the United States, YWCAs are in almost 300 communities serving over 2 million members and
participants
at 1,778 different sites and are organized into nine regions.  The YWCA of Jamestown is
part of the Northeast region.

The YWCA is one of the largest providers of domestic violence programs and shelters in the U.S., serving
700,000 women and children annually.

The YWCA is one of the largest providers of child care in the U.S. with
750,000 children annually.

began the first boarding house for female students, teachers and factory workers in
New York City in 1858
held the first training school for practical nursing in Brooklyn in 1983
hosted the first interracial conference in Louisville, KY in 1915
started the first women's pension fund in 1924
extended services to Japanese-American women and girls incarcerated in WWII
Relocation Centers
was the first women's organization invited to join the U.S. Olympic Committee multi-sport
division
organized the first National Day of Commitment to Eliminate Racism, responding to
Rodney King's beating/Los Angeles riots
