TEAM- Teenage Education And Motherhood

The TEAM Program provides education, counseling and supportive services for pregnant teens, teen mothers, and their children. TEAM makes it possible for young women to complete their high school education while also concentrating on prenatal care and parenting education.

Team is for young women, ages 12-21 years old, who are at least 4 months pregnant or have a child under 3 years old with the goal of completing a high school education, while receiving help with motherhood challenges.

Credit courses towards a high school diploma are offered through TEAM, area schools and BOCES vocational programs. Students generally attend classes at TEAM half of the school day as well as attend classes at their “home school” or BOCES for the remainder of the day. All students take a Maternal and Child Health credit course, which includes topics such as life skills, child development, parenting, health and nutrition.

GED preparation is available for some students, if appropriate.

Case Management and Support
Individual case management, advocacy, and referrals help students with academic and personal needs and concerns. We try to support students in any facet of life they may be struggling as their personal lives can have a significant impact on their education. Academic advisement and career exploration help students plan for their and their child’s future. We use our “family-like” atmosphere to support our students in finding their strengths so they may achieve their goals.

TEAM provides a “teaching” childcare for TEAM students while they attend school. They take daily opportunities to teach mothers about bonding, health, safety, and development. Staff members model quality childcare and help mothers with problems and questions about their children. Children have interaction, stimulation and developmental learning experiences in the NYS licensed nursery program. Mothers also have the ability to see their children during the school day during lunch and some parenting class activities.

Provided Services
TEAM provides students with bus transportation, breakfast and lunch, family planning education, clinic tours, peer education presentations to help other teens understand how parenthood has changed their lives.

Additional Benefits
Students are with peers that are understanding of their situation and have similar experiences, providing additional support.  We hold special events including, family nights, annual field trip, experiential trips, and our end of the year banquet. We have much collaboration within our community, which provides students with additional education and varied cultural experiences.
